Set break reminders on your Mac

Get Mac notifications reminding you to drink water, stand up or rest your eyes, on your own schedule.

Updated November 3, 2026

Have the Mac app remind you to drink water, stand up or rest your eyes, or add reminders of your own.

Each reminder arrives as a macOS notification with Done and Snooze 10 min buttons.

  1. Open Settings › This Mac › Break reminders.
  2. Turn on any of the three under Breaks. They all start off.
  3. Choose how often it repeats. Use Hours to limit it to certain times or to weekdays only, and Test to see the notification.
  4. To add your own, type a title under New reminder, choose how often, and click Add. Delete removes a reminder you added.
  5. To stop everything for a while, choose Pause 1 Hour. Resume starts them again.

Ask an agent instead: in a chat that runs on this Mac, say something like "remind me to drink water every 2 hours from 9 to 6". Agents can list, add, change, delete and pause the same reminders you see in Settings. One an agent adds is marked "Added by an agent".

Where: Mac app › Settings › This Mac › Break reminders.

Good to know:

  • Settings offers intervals from 20 minutes to 4 hours. An agent can set anything from 5 minutes to 24 hours.
  • You can have up to 20 reminders of your own.
  • A reminder that comes due after you have been away from the Mac for 5 minutes is not sent. The time away counts as the break, and the interval starts again.
  • The schedule survives a restart, but reminders stop while AgentSky is quit.
  • If notifications are off for AgentSky, the page says so and offers to turn them on.
