Use voice dictation in a chat

Updated October 21, 2026

Press the mic icon in the composer to start dictating — your words appear as text, ready to send.

Speak at a natural pace. Your speech is transcribed in real time and placed into the composer. When you are done, press the mic icon again or press ⌘E to stop. You can then edit the text before sending.

Where: Web › mic icon in the chat composer. Mac › mic icon or press ⌘E to toggle; hold ⌘E for push-to-talk.

Dictation defaults to Chinese (Mandarin) and handles long recordings without cutting off. A live waveform shows that the mic is active. If the mic is denied, a status message explains how to fix it.

Good to know: on Mac you can change the recognition engine and microphone in Settings › This Mac › Voice. See Dictation settings on Mac.
